What Are The Advantages Of 3D Design Over 2D Design

The Advantages Of 3D Design Over 2D Design - 3D Model Of An Engine Or Something Like An Engine.

3D design is used by many industries and can be used in architecture to draw plans for buildings as well as being used by eCommerce brands to provide a realistic design of a product to consumers. Additionally to having uses within different industries to target consumers it also provides a great deal of use to manufacturers of what the final product is expected to look like once it has been made, helping the manufacturers match the made product to the expectations of the designer/ client. We’ve reviewed the advantages of 3D design that you can benefit from when using our 3D design services at Fuel Immersive.

Visualisation

It goes without saying that a 3D rendering will help you to visualise a design a lot more than a 2D design will, thanks to the enhanced realism it offers. This is a great benefit to those who find it hard to visualise and understand designs in 2D form.

Ability To Create Photorealistic Renderings

Additionally to the benefit of being able to visualise a drawing better in 3D, it also provides the ability to create photorealistic renderings. This isn’t easily possible within 2D design due to the inability of adding 3D imaging onto a flat view of a product. This is a significant advantage of 3D design to both the property & home decor industry, as it can provide the ability to enable an interior designer to work on the interior decor of a property. This can give the client a visual representation of what their house can look like, to ensure that they are happy with the design before the changes are made. Read our article on the benefits of 3D modelling & product rendering for eCommerce for more information.

Saves Time

One of the many advantages of 3d design from a business standpoint is that it saves time, especially during an approval process. It is likely that those who aren’t familiar with understanding 2D designs will be able to understand it in 3D easier thanks to the more life-like visualisation. In turn, if somebody that isn’t familiar with drawings within the design industry, it is highly likely that they will be able to sign off and approve a design quicker the easier it is for them to visualise.

If you need to create 2D and 3D designs of a product, you can save time by creating the 3D version first as this can be made into a 2D design quicker than creating it the other way around. As well as this, thanks to the many angles that 3D design offers this allows you to spot mistakes easier that you may not notice in 2D designing until the product is manufactured, which in turn saves time reworking a 2D design.

Ability To Utilise 3D Printing

Rendering a product or scale model in 3D opens up the possibility of utilising 3D printing technology. This is a great option for those looking to create a new product as a prototype can be created with a 3D printer, meaning that you can take this along to a product manufacturer or a meeting with investors to give people a 1:1 product or scaled-down, tangible product for people to visualise what you are looking to create.

Enhances Project & Product Proposals

In terms of what design should be used in a proposal, it is important to think about how you are going to convey to clients that you are innovative and can provide everything or even more than what your competition can offer. For this reason, it is crucial that 3D design is used within a proposal to enhance your product to potential clients, this means that there is a visual representation of your product for everyone to understand.

The advantages of 3D design don’t stop with showcasing everyday products, however, as it’s also a great way of marketing residential and commercial properties. Through 3D design, it is possible for potential buyers to clearly visualise a structure, which is exceptionally important when a building has not been completed yet and even gives a great alternative to a property viewing if the potential buyer is unable to view the property physically.

It is so important to remember that technology is changing all of the time and by not updating your business with the newest technologies, you may soon fall back in the industry if you can’t offer the services that your competitors have the ability to. This can be compared to Hand-drawing designs pre-1970 when the first CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software first came out. CAD sped up the efficiency for manufacturers and designers to create, change and edit their designs.

The companies that adopted the technology were far ahead of traditional designers, allowing them to win more planning applications and bids compared to their competitors. Now imagine what the step-change from 2D to 3D design will be able to offer new and innovative businesses moving into the next decade.

Execute Control & Accuracy

Being able to edit components separately is one of the main advantages of 3D design, but did you know that 3D design provides a higher level of accuracy and the ability to see how components line up against each other? This is possible to some extent with 2D design, however, it comes with the potential issue of components not fitting or lining up, due to only being able to see all the components in 2d perspectives. As a result, saves time and money on mistakes that could easily be avoided through 3D based design solutions.

As an example, a company is designing a new industrial shredding system and they are currently working on the housing/panels that cover the mechanical elements. In standard 2D design, changing the sizing of panels is fairly straightforward. However, if one of the panels has not been edited correctly, by accident or does not line up as it should, this could be difficult to spot until you have already manufactured said panel. Whereas in 3D, you are able to inspect the panels and the whole system from all angles, allowing you to spot the mistakes far ahead of any potential issues arising.

Another way of maintaining accuracy and control is the use of a 3D mouse which allows you to zoom, pan and rotate 3D models or camera views simultaneously, which is not a feature that can be used within 2D design.
While we’re always happy to point out the many ways in which 3D design is superior to 2D design, this isn’t to suggest that you cannot use them in conjunction with each other. It is just crucial to remember to keep up to date with new technologies and incorporate these within your company as much as you can in order to stay line or beyond what is offered from your competitors.
